Beyond Contrafacts: Broadening Approaches to Musical Borrowing, Intertextuality, and Re-Creation

Wednesday, 13 November: 12:00pm–6:00pm CST
Thursday, 14 November: 9:00am–11:30am CST
Clark 5

This symposium will facilitate dialogue between established approaches to contrafacture in historical European repertoires and in global cultural contexts in which contrafacture is a thriving, living musical practice. The symposium will delve into the shared epistemological functions of musical borrowing, re-creation, and interpolation beyond circumstances of time, place, community, and/or musical genre. In each session, presenters will deliver 10-minute lightning talks, leaving time ample time for discussion of these techniques with attendees.

Additionally, the symposium proudly features an invited performance by ANIMA Early Music, a “metamorphosing ensemble” specializing in “new works of text and music that are in conversation with early sources and soundworlds.”
